BigchainDB fills the gap in the decentralized ecosystem: a decentralized database, on a large scale. This shows the performance of 1 million writes per throughput per second, storing petabytes of data, with sub-second latency.

BigchainDB design begins with a distributed database (DB), and adds blockchain

characteristics through a set of prayers including decentralized control, immutability, and the creation & movement of digital assets. BigchainDB inherits the characteristics of modern distributed databases: linear scaling in throughput and capacity by number of nodes, full-featured NoSQL query language, efficient queries, and permissions. Built on an existing distributed DB, it also inherits the hardened enterprise code for most of the codebase.

Measurable capacity means contracts and legally binding certificates can be stored directly in the blockchain database. The permissions system allows configurations ranging from corporate private blocking databases to open, public blockchain databases. BigchainDB complements decentralized processing platforms such as the Ethereum and decentralized file systems such as the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS)
