Submarine communication cables are cables placed under the sea to connect telecommunications between countries.
The first submarine cable communications carry telegraphic data. The next generation carries telephone communications, and then communication data. All modern cables use fiber optic technology to carry digital data, which is then also to carry phone, internet, and personal data.

The technology used by MoyaNetworks project
- ACE deploys the folded fiber optic technology developed by Alcatel-Lucent. Fiber optics offers higher quality broadband internet that is better than satellite and alower charges. The ACE cable will extend over 17,000 km from Penmarch in Brittany, France, to Cape Town in South Africa, at depths of nearly 6,000 meters below sea level.
- The multiplexing division multiplexing (WDM) technology enables to increase its capacity according to various needs and improvements in the latest technology by upgrading station equipment without submarine cable modifications.
The ACE system will also facilitate connectivity with terrestrial fiber-optic cables. The backhaul network (to transport capacity from the Inland coastal landing) will also utilize the fiber of a number of South African terrestrial fiber providers
